We Are More Than Just Survivors

Whenever I’ve heard the word survivor, I’ve always had mixed feelings about what it’s truly implying. To some people the word has a negative connotation and to others it’s a word of triumph and victory. For this group the meaning is definitely the latter of those two and yet, I still feel like there is more to us than just surviving. When looking up the meaning of survivor in the dictionary the majority of definitions were not very positive, for example…

  • A person who survives, especially a person remaining alive after an event in which others have died: he was the sole survivor of the massacre.

  • The remainder of a group of people or things: a survivor from last year's team.

  • A person who copes well with difficulties in their life: she is a born survivor.

  • Law a joint tenant who has the right to the whole estate on the other's death.

While it is true that we have endured a long run in this program and have faced many challenges and obstacles, we don’t find ourselves as lone survivors or just merely coping with the difficulties of life. I would challenge each of you as we lead closer to graduation to shift perspectives and change from an attitude of surviving to thriving. It can not be denied that we have had much to get through and overcome both educationally and personally throughout this program, yet when we cross the stage at graduation it doesn’t truly end there does it? God called us to this program not just so that we could further our career goals but because His plans are far greater than we can see right now. We are meant for something more and while this program may be ending it’s not the end of what we will do or become, it’s only the beginning.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

-Jeremiah 29:11

We survived through the endless hours of research and forum postings and we endured the late nights spent finishing projects and papers. Yet, with God the work is never truly done and He has seen us through every late night and moment of stress because it is in those moments we learn not only to survive to see an end, but to thrive to continue the work He has started in us. We are about to go back to our classrooms or start in a classroom for the first time and the ideas and faith we have developed throughout this program are going to propel us to inspire generations to come. We leave stronger than we came into this program and we leave with an excitement and drive to not only reform education into something beautiful but to bring God to the darkest parts of this world.

I don’t know about you, but I want to do more than just survive, I want to thrive and continue being the light in this dark world. I want Jesus to shine through me to every child and teacher I meet and to know that I am not going into education simply for a paycheck or job ambition, but that I am entering this field because I know I was called to impart something unique and special to all those with whom I will cross paths. We’ve been called and appointed by God to be teachers and that comes with a massive responsibility with which He has entrusted us. Always remember that while some days it will seem like all we can do is simply survive and not know how we’ll actually make it through them, there are going to be more days ahead when we are thriving and anxious for tomorrow. There will be moments when it feels as if nothing is going right and in those moments look for that small glimpse of hope that can be found in that one child whose life you’ve deeply impacted just by the smile on your face.

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

-Deuteronomy 31:8

I am blessed and grateful to know that I have been able to walk this journey with each and everyone of you. Your words and insight have helped shaped who I am and who I will ultimately become. Always remember that we will take a little bit of each other with us as we go and we’ll always have God by our side. Don’t look at today or tomorrow as just something to get through but remind yourself that you were born for greatness and placed with special care exactly where you are right now and you will thrive!
